Need an Eye Exam in Perrysburg?
Pure Vision Center is conveniently close to Toledo, OH. Regular eye exams are important whether you are young or old, whether you are healthy or your vision appears strong. One should make an appointment for a regular eye exam not only to check your eyes, but also as an indicator of your over all health. Eyecare experts recommend you have a complete eye exam every one to three years, depending on your age, risk factors, and physical condition.
Your eyes can not only tell your optometrist about your vision but also about your nutrition, and well being. During a complete eye exam, your eye doctor will check your eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription as well for common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. It is also important to check how your eyes work together as a team. All these factors are considered when your eye doctor performs an eye exam.
A comprehensive eye exam includes several tests and procedures aimed at evaluating the health of your eyes and the quality of your sight. These tests include simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, and more complicated tests, like as using a powerful lens to examine the inside of your eyes.
Children’s Eye Exams
Some experts estimate that a small percentage of pre-schoolers and a quarter of all school-aged children have vision problems. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that all children should have their eyes checked at 6 months of age, at age 3 and again at the start of school. Once children are school age and do not show signs of vision problems nor have risk factors for eye or vision problems they should continue to have their eyes examined at least every other year throughout school age.
If your child has existing vision problems or risk factors he should have his eyes examined more frequently. Common risk factors for vision problems include:
- premature birth
- developmental delays
- turned or crossed eyes
- family history of eye disease
- history of eye injury
- other physical illness or disease
The AOA recommends that if your child already wears eyeglasses or contact lenses, he should should have his eyes examined once during the school year or according to his eye doctor’s instructions. Read more about Pediatric Eye Exams.
Adults
If you are an adult that wears eyeglasses or contacts, the AOA also recommends an annual eye exam. For those that do not wear corrective lenses, it is recommended that you schedule an eye exam every two to three years up to the age of 40. Of course this depends on your rate of visual change and overall health. Certain risk factors call for more regular exams. Risks factors include: diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders, because many diseases can have an impact on vision and eye health.
If you are over 40, it’s a good idea to have your eyes examined every one to two years to check for common age-related eye problems such as presbyopia, cataracts and macular degeneration. Read more about Vision After 40.
Because the risk of eye disease continues to increase with advancing age, everyone over the age of 60 should be examined annually. Read more about Vision After 60.
